When do you need a NIF?

The Número de Identificación Fiscal is the number the Spanish state uses to identify you as a taxpayer. Without it, most official steps in Spain simply stop.

Individuals need it to buy property or handle taxes; foreign companies need their own to operate in Spain. In both cases it is the very first step — everything else builds on it.

Sell on Spanish marketplaces

Amazon.es and other platforms ask for a Spanish tax ID to verify seller accounts — no NIF, no listings.

Register for EPR compliance

Spain's packaging law requires producer registration — and the registry wants a NIF before anything else.

Buy property or sign one-off deals

Notaries, banks, and the land registry all require a NIF before you can sign anything.

Deal with the Agencia Tributaria

Invoices, VAT refunds, withholdings — any official tax matter in Spain starts with a NIF.

NIE or NIF?

Two numbers, one easy rule.

The NIE identifies foreign individuals in Spain; the NIF identifies taxpayers. Which one you need depends on who is applying:

Individuals

You apply as an individual

Already have a NIE? Then it works as your tax ID — it may just need to be registered with the tax agency, which we can handle. No NIE? You can get a NIF without one — no Spanish residency required.

Foreign companies

You apply for a foreign company

Your Ltd, GmbH, SAS, or LLC gets its own company NIF — without opening a Spanish subsidiary and without the directors needing a NIE. This is the number marketplaces and the EPR registry ask for.

Not sure which case is yours? Mention it in the form — we will tell you before you pay anything.

What is the difference between a NIE and a NIF?

The NIE identifies foreign individuals living in or dealing with Spain; the NIF is the tax identification number used with the Agencia Tributaria. For individuals, a NIE doubles as a NIF once registered with the tax agency. Foreign companies receive their own company NIF.

Do I need both a NIE and a NIF?

No. If you already have a NIE, you normally do not need a separate NIF — it may just need to be registered with the tax agency. If you have neither and only need to handle tax matters (selling online, buying property), a NIF is enough — and much faster to obtain.

Does my foreign company need its own NIF?

Yes, as soon as it does anything tax-relevant in Spain: selling on marketplaces, registering for EPR, invoicing Spanish clients, or buying assets. Your UK Ltd, GmbH, SAS, or LLC gets its own Spanish NIF — no Spanish subsidiary required.

What type of NIF will I receive?

Foreign companies receive an N-type NIF issued by the Agencia Tributaria. It identifies your entity for tax purposes and is accepted for marketplace verification, EPR registration, and one-off transactions. It does not register you for Spanish VAT by itself — we will tell you honestly if your case needs more.

Do I need notarized, apostilled, or translated documents?

No. We prepare the application so that standard identity or company documents are enough — no notary, no apostille, no sworn translations.

Do I need to travel to Spain?

No. The whole process is remote: you fill in a form, we file with the tax agency, and your NIF arrives by email. You never visit a consulate, police station, or tax office.

How long does it really take?

Once you have paid and we have your documents, your NIF is usually issued within 24 hours. If the tax agency raises a question, we handle the follow-up and keep you posted.

Can I use this NIF for EPR registration?

Yes — that is our home turf. The NIF is step one of Spanish packaging compliance; once it is issued, we can take over your producer registration, authorized representation, and annual declarations.
